1972 Holden LJ Torana GTR XU1 - Lone O'Ranger ... (SOLD)

"Trans Tasman Treasure." That's how Survivor Car Australia described this beauty in Issue 7 of their magazine. In fact Survivor Car wondered how the New Zealanders let "a national treasure like this, quite possibly the best unrestored XU-1 in New Zealand" get away. "What were they thinking?" Now for sale in stunning Lone O'Ranger Orange this is a rare opportunity to secure arguably one of the best surviving Torana GTR XU-1s. For sale from our Sydney Showroom.

The 1972 Hardie-Ferodo 500 was held on 1 October, 1972 at the Mount Panorama Circuit just outside Bathurst in New South Wales. Cars competed in four classes defined by Capacity Price Units, where the engine capacity, expressed in litres was multiplied by the purchase price in Australian dollars to arrive at a CP value for each vehicle. It was the 13th running of the Bathurst 500 race and the last to be held over the original distance of 500 miles. It was also the last to allow drivers to compete for the full distance without a relief driver.

Aussie Muscle Car fans will remember this rain soaked race won by 27 year old Peter Brock driving a Holden Dealer Team prepared Torana LJ XU-1, the first of Brock's record nine victories in which Brock finished a lap ahead of Queensland racer John French driving a XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III. And this was despite Brock being penalised one minute at his last pit stop for starting his car while the HDT crew were still re-fueling. A further lap behind was the Valiant Charger E49 of Doug Chivas. The Hardie-Ferodo 500 created two legends on that day. Brock and the Torana XU-1.

For sale is a genuine unrestored November, 1972 Bathurst LJ GTR XU-1 Torana. In factory Lone O'Ranger Orange with Black vinyl trim, this Torana XU-1 is in original condition throughout and is presented in totally correct factory specification. Sold originally through K E Carter Motors in Tauranga, New Zealand on the 29th March, 1973 to a young electrical contractor a Mr. Tony Erceg, this Bathurst bred Tory was one of a limited run of 300 LJ GTR XU-1s built after September 1972 to comply with CAMS 5/5V homologation specifications for the componentry to enable the XU-1 to race in the 1972 Bathurst 500. Built at the Adelaide GMH plant, this LJ is running the matching numbers JP block with correct head, intake manifold, exhaust and original date code correct gearbox, diff housing and diff centre. And that wonderful Premium 98 is still pumped through this little beasts veins through the original triple 175 CD-2 Zenith Strombergs. Even the original brake master cylinder still works perfectly.

Gears are swapped through the original 899 Aussie close ratio M20 gearbox and this Lone O'Ranger XU-1 was built with a 3.36:1 GV4 axle with G80 LSD and was recorded with an ex-plant date of 23rd November, 1972. Look closely at the gallery photos and you will see still in place the factory markings on the gearbox and diff plus there is the original diff tag. Glass is all original with correct date coding including the front windscreen.

The black interior is all original as are the rear seats, door cards, belts, headlining and carpets. The XU-1 is fitted with an Air Ranger AM Transistor radio and this is still working. The Torana has a documented 83,556 miles on the clock with New Zealand Transport documentation confirming mileage travelled since delivery in 1973. The car was featured in Issue 7 of Survivor Car Australia and comes with two sets of keys, paperwork relating to ownership changes and registration details over the years plus a photo of the car when it was used for the original owner's wedding. Even the original boot mat, tank cover and original spare is still with the car.

This Torana is a well known GTR XU-1, was invited to by Todd Martin and the XU-1 club to complete a lap of Bathurst in 2015 as part of the Bathurst 1000 pre race festivities.
