1971 XY GT Fairmont ... (SOLD)

Rhino or Super Roo...What are the differences?

Not many when it comes down to it.

The South African assembled, Australian built XY GT Fairmont was endowed with the exact same running gear as their Aussie brother. A 351 4V Cleveland, 4 speed Top Loader gearbox or FMX T-Bar auto and the bullet proof 9" LSD. Sure the name plate was different (they already had a Falcon badged car in South Africa), the GT striping was slightly different incorporating a Rhinoceros over the Aussie Kangaroo and Joey, the interior featured a KPH speedo, the seat trim and door cards were Futura style and a lot of GT Fairmonts were optioned with vinyl roofs which was a very popular options in SA at the time.

However, at the heart of these cars, they were more alike than not.

And in fact, South African car enthusiasts were just as excited about the XY GT as their Aussie mates snapping up even more XY GT Fairmonts than we did here in Australia (1,800 SA GTs vs. 1,557 Aussie GTs).

Fast forward to 2005 and this beautiful Track Red (Peri Peri) factory 4 speed manual example was shipped back to an XY GT hungry Australia. Initially it was enjoyed by a couple of Aussie owners before being purchased by the current owner approximately 3 years ago, before being fully restored by LJT Restorations in Adelaide, SA.

The GT was stripped to a bare shell and fully restored. The matching numbers 351 Cleveland 4V has been balanced, fitted with roller rockers, a F246 cam, stainless valves, a 750 DP Holley and dyno tuned with 450 horses.

Everything has been rebuilt including the 4 speed Top Loader gearbox and the 9" diff. The heater box has been replaced and the car has been completely rewired. The steering box and column bearings have been reconditioned. The GT has been fitted with new interior hood lining, new door cards, seat belts and Aussie spec speedo. The original GT steering wheel is still in place and shows nice patina for its age.

All brakes, springs, shoes have been renewed and new front brake rotors and wheel bearings are fitted. A full 2 1/2" stainless exhaust painted matt black with extractors has also been fitted. The genuine Shaker has been refurbished.

The list is endless.

The car has covered 152 miles since the restoration and the GT is riding on 5 slots with new permanent red wall tyres, comes with a 5 slots spare, tools and rubber boot mat.

Rhino or Roo? At the end of the day they are pretty much the same. And here is a great opportunity to purchase a fully restored and sorted GT at a good savings over the price of its Aussie cousin.

Located in Kalgoorlie, WA and currently with full WA registration. (AMCS Ref: 5740)
