1971 Ford XY Falcon 500 - 351 T-Code Police Car
This may look like a mild mannered XY Falcon 500 but lurking under the bonnet is in fact a factory fitted T Code 351 4V Cleveland V8, the very same engine as fitted to the Superoo XY GT Falcon. Back in the day, the Police needed a car that could keep up with the hot Toranas, Falcons and Chargers so they ordered a wolf in sheep's clothing. A model that only the Police could order. Now freshly restored and for sale from Brisbane, QLD.
In Nugget Gold with Saddle trim, this rare XY Falcon is believed to be one of only 150 T-Code Police cars built and one of only 2 in this colour combo. Under the bonnet rests the T-Code GT-spec 4V headed Cleveland 351ci, bolted to a FMX three-speed T-bar auto connected to a nine-inch rear end via a shorter tail shaft and a 3.5:1 diff ratio. Identified by the factory option code 36, these factory special order cars scored upgraded wiring, a heavy duty cooling system, a heavy duty battery and alternator, sports suspension and driving lights as per their XY GT brothers.
Of course, the Police missed out on the GT shaker poking out through the bonnet and the interior is bog-standard Falcon 500 including a skinny two-spoke steering wheel, standard dash and instrument cluster. But it did get the important bits and the factory dual exhaust makes up for the lack of a Superfringe push button radio.
As the GT-HO was purpose built for Bathurst, the T-Code Falcon was purpose built for the Police Highway Patrol. Retired former Ford Australia Chief Engineer, David Ford notes that Ford's "approach throughout the police pursuit cars program was that we placed a very powerful engine into the volume selling sedan. Then we added heavy duty GT spring rates for better handling, but with a raised ride height to allow for rougher use by the police and the heavier loads they carried." One addition that came about after the police had used the cars for a short while were exclusive ‘police’ front seats. Special heavy duty seats replaced the standard front pews as the frames were twisting with the added weight of the burly Aussie copper.
While every police force in Australia was offered the XY T-code pursuit Falcons most of these cars ended up in the Victorian, West Australian and Queensland forces.
With a ground up restoration just completed including a back to bare metal respray in 2 pack Nugget Gold, a retrim to the interior and a thorough mechanical rebuild to the matching numbers T code 351 Clevo, this ex. chaser is ready to go. The motor has been treated to Phase 3 spec 4MAB crank, GT rods, reconditioned 4V heads with original exhaust manifolds and a 2 1/2" system all the way through. The owner has also rebuilt the FMX and the diff has rear finned drums fitted. This is a factory dual exhaust hanger car.
The XY is factory fitted with bucket seats and centre console. All glass is factory day one including the front windscreen. And one item that these Police T-Codes got over the GT Falcon is the Police only spec "130 MPH Police Speedo". And of course there is a lifetime of great Police chases under the hood if only the car could talk.
Supplied with the original yellow fog lamps, new Falcon 500 chrome body side mouldings and clips and a verification letter from Ford confirming the options fitted and the provenance of this XY as a genuine T-Code Police car.
