1983 Ford Falcon XE - Dick Johnson Grand Prix - CDT #37
For sale is a super rare Dick Johnson XE Falcon Grand Prix CDT. Build No.37 is running the EFI 6 cylinder 4.1 L motor and is the only Dick Johnson Grand Prix of the 43 built to be painted in Sno White. For your inspection from Melbourne, VIC.
With Ford’s plan to end local V8 production looming, Dick Johnson and other Ford drivers were facing the prospect of being left without a competitive local entry to race in the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC). As a result of Ford's decision, a plan was hatched to produce 250 Turbo 6 Falcons to qualify as an Australian production car, and thereby allow Dick Johnson to compete in the ATCC in the post-V8 era. The Country Dealer Team (CDT), who had extensive experience developing CDT Holdens approached Dick Johnson for his naming rights in order to boost the cars profile.
However, with the regulation changes to the ‘Group A’ format, Dick Johnson made the decision to use the Ford Mustang, before moving to the Ford Sierra RS500 resulting in only a small number of these special Falcons being built.
Australian Muscle Car Magazine notes that only 43 cars were produced. Thirty one Turbos and 12 as non turbos. In total thirty six were painted Zenith Blue, 6 Monza Red and only one was painted Sno White.
The car’s facts and figures are quite impressive for the era, and particularly so considering it was a 6 cylinder. Effectively, these cars started out as standard XE Falcons, modified by CDT and Dick Johnson to improve the Falcons performance. These modifications included Turbocharging the 4.1 litre six cylinder to produce 190kW (255hp) for the Turbo cars and for the non turbo Falcons, CDT added high performance extractors, ported the heads and blueprinted the manifold, dizzy and carby. All Grand Prixs were fitted with the four-speed manual gearbox, a heavy duty clutch and 4 wheel disc brakes with a LSD rear end. The suspension was lowered and stiffened, Enkel alloys wheels with BF Goodrich Comp T/A tyres were fitted and a great looking body kit produced by ‘CDT’ consisting of a front air dam, flared wheel arches and a rear wing was bolted on. Grand Prix and Dick Johnson signature decals featured on the flanks. And an unique numbered CDT build plate was fitted to the dashboard and intake manifold.
On the inside, the XE was equipped with body hugging Scheel front seats with an unique to the Grand Prix cloth trim and the steering wheel featured a horn button that reminded the driver they were sitting in a Limited Edition Falcon.
Originally purchased from Highway Ford in Maitland, NSW, this Dick Johnson Special has had only three owners. The first owner for one year before moving to the second owner who enjoyed this Falcon from 1984 until May 2019 when it was purchased by the current custodian. The XE comes with the original owners service books and manuals plus the CDT paperwork.
The Falcon runs the all matching numbers Crossflow EFI 6 cylinder engine and has covered a genuine 136,887 Kilometres from new. The original 4 speed manual gearbox has been upgraded to a fully rebuilt T5 5 speed and the diff has also been upgraded to an EB LSD 3.27:1 ratio rear end. The Grand Prix comes with the original diff and gearbox supplied. The glovebox has also been signed by Dick Johnson and there is a Dick Johnson numbered jacket included.
This is a standout example of the Dick Johnson Grand Prix. A one off limited edition Falcon and certainly a piece of Australian motoring history that celebrates Ford's long term connection with racer Dick Johnson.
