Mildly updated from the HT GTS 350, the HG GTS 350 was more refined with cleaner lines and a favourite among many Monaro enthusiasts. In a December 1970 story for Wheels magazine, Mel Nichols wrote about his drive in the HG GTS 350 from Nyngan to Bourke, NSW. Its 130 miles of dead straight, flat highway. According to Nichols, "We tackled it in daylight, ready to open out the Monaro for the first time. It cruised effortlessly and pleasantly for both driver and passenger at 120mph with plenty in reserve. After 50 miles at an almost constant 120 we pushed the accelerator right down and the Monaro was soon showing 133mph on the clock. This corrected to a genuine 130mph and it was no problem to hold it mile after mile with no other car in sight.”

In case your head is struggling with the conversion, that’s cruising 193 and then 210km/h. Pretty damn quick for 1970!

By 1970, the HG Monaro was less a race car and more an executive cruiser. You could get your HG GTS 350 equipped with the Saginaw 4 speed manual gearbox or the 2 speed Powerglide.

To many Monaro enthusiasts, this last of the original Monaros is the best sorted and in manual 350 combo, certainly the rarest and most sought after for the collector. One of only 85 HG Monaro 350s equipped with the more powerful McKinnon block, this GTS Monaro is one of 405 HG 350s built – 141 autos and 264 manuals making this one rare Lion.
