1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 - 428 Cobra Jet 4 Speed
Now for sale this immaculate concours restored '69 Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet Ram Air located in Yeppoon, Qld.
Ford's redesign of the Mustang for 1969 saw the car grow in size over the original Mustang Pony car allowing Ford engineers the room to install a variety of engines for the Mustang range. You could now option your Mustang with anything from a fuel efficient 200 and 250 Cui 6 cylinder, a small block 302 or 351 Cui V8 or perhaps the Big Block 390, 428 or 429 Cui V8s.
And for 1969, Ford introduced the Mach 1 distinguished by it's reflective side stripes, a pop-open petrol cap, dual exhausts, matte-black hood with simulated air scoop and NASCAR-style cable and bonnet pin tiedowns. It used steel wheels with white lettered Goodyear Polyglas tyres. A functional "shaker" hood scoop - which visibly vibrated by being attached directly to the air cleaner through a hole in the hood - was available, as was a tail-mounted wing and chin spoilers and rear window louvered blackout shade. The Mach 1 featured a deluxe interior with simulated wood trim, high-backed seats, extra sound deadening, remote sports mirrors, and other features.
But the biggest story with the Mach 1 was the choice of engines available. 72,458 Mach 1s were built in 1969 with 10,130 of those specified with the super popular 428 4V Cobra Jet Ram Air V8 engine. With the Mach 1, Ford outdid all the competition with an AA/Fuel dragster-style bug-catcher sticking right out through a hole in the hood. The famous "Shaker" was fastened to the top of the air cleaner, vibrating back and forth with engine motion. And that huge matt black hood was spec'd with bonnet locking pins in the true NASCAR/road-racer tradition.
The renowned 428 Cobra Jet big block needs very little introduction to performance enthusiasts. Conservatively rated at 335 hp at 5200 rpm it's the same prime mover that pushes NHRA super stock Mustangs through the quarter in the mid-11s with speeds in the 120-mph range. The 10.6 to 1 compression ratio combined with free-breathing cylinder heads, and an intake manifold topped by a 735 CFM Holley 4-bbl. carburetor, allow the Cobra Jet to turn out an admirable quantity of energy in spite of its fairly long 3.98 inch stroke. And torque is available by the truck loads at 597 Nm @ 3,400.
For sale is a stunning example of the 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet. In Candy Apple Red with Black trim as noted on the Marti Report, this Mach 1 was originally sold through a Cincinnati Ford dealer in Ohio, USA and optioned with the R code 428 CJ Ram Air engine, 4 speed close ration Top Loader gearbox, Traction Lok 9" Differential with 3.5:1 gears, power steering, power front disc brakes and AM Radio.
The Mach 1 was rotisserie restored in the US and imported to Australia in 2012. The car has a photo file of the restoration including the full mechanical rebuild. The Mach 1 is a full matching numbers car with the unmodified 428 Cobra Jet rebuilt to the original factory specifications.
