Rare K Code Hi Po 289 4V Mustang Convertible for sale. Located in Shellharbour, NSW. Asking $90,000.

If you were a Mustang buyer in 1965, the ultimate model at the top of your list was the K-code. What this Ford code referred to was the highest spec available in the stout 289 Windsor V8. Initially only offered as a four-speed manual, the K code was the High Performance 289 V8 with upgraded conrods, pistons, heads, valves and carburettor. In addition, the engine sported a chrome air cleaner cover with ‘high performance 289’ emblazoned on it. Put your foot down and an extra 50 horses were on tap resulting in around 271hp being produced by the sweet 289 V8. The K code also scored a beefed-up driveline to cope with the extra urge and more enthusiastic use.

These were the basis for the famous and all-conquering Caroll Shelby cars as they were clearly the perfect platform for a Mustang for the track.

Because they cost a few hundred dollars extra, and not everyone was a budding racer, the production numbers were relatively low for this engine in the early series Mustangs.

For sale is this 1 of just 223 '65 K Code convertibles ever built. Imported to Australia 32 years ago from Oregon, USA after it was found on an Indian reservation riddled with bullet holes in 1985. The Mustang was imported to Australia in 1989 and treated to a full bare metal restoration. The body was finished in Candy Apple Red Pearl by Roy Potter of Top Kolor and there are both photos and receipts from the restoration. The original floors remain throughout with NOS Ford rear quarters, NOS front and rear bumpers and the interior is finished in Palomino with a matching Palomino electric top and GT Mustang woodgrain steering wheel.

Mechanically, the car runs a genuine rebuilt 271hp 289ci 4V Windsor K Code engine, 4 speed Top Loader gearbox with Hurst shifter and 9" with 3.5:1 Eton TruTrac LSD centre. The heads have been reconditioned, with new valves and hardened seats, new HD clutch, genuine Autolite C40F AL 600cfm manual choke carby, twin point mechanical advance Autolite distributor, Hi Po Cast iron headers, rebuilt 9", 4 core radiator using the original top and bottom tanks, new original style Scott Drake 2" dual exhaust and new tail shaft and universals.

The RHD conversion was carried out by Mike O'Sullivan in 1998, a 16:1 steering box fitted along with new suspension and GT style sway bar. Brakes are Kelsey Hayes on the front with flex hoses, new dual circuit master cylinder and booster. New rear drums, shoes, springs and cylinders complete the picture.

The Mustang is riding on 7" Speedy Ally rims x 4 fitted with new Kenda 215/60R/15 tyres. Open the boot and along with the new boot mat and spare wheel there is a fake NOS bottle with a stereo sub woofer hidden inside just for fun.

The car is full NSW registered with Engineers Certification for the RHD conversion. STANG NSW number plates are included for the NSW buyer.

Located in Shellharbour, NSW. (Ref: 5914)

And if you like we will gladly arrange a video inspection/road test of the car using WhatsApp and of course there is no issue with door to door transport anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.
