Now for sale this very rare K-code High Performance 289 Mustang Fastback GT, in factory Raven Black. If you were a Mustang buyer in 1965, the ultimate options at the top of the list were the 271hp K-code Hi-Po 289 4V Windsor small block V8, and the savvy GT Equipment Group. Over 550,000 Mustangs were produced in the 1965 model run, but only 7,273 were produced with the expensive K-code option, and only 15,079 were supplied with the GT Group package. And with only 70,000 of these produced in the delicious new fastback shape, we ask how many Fastbacks received both of these elite options AND were produced in factory Raven Black?! We consider this stunning Fastback a very rare pony indeed! The K-codes were initially offered with a four-speed manual only (close ratio Top Loaders of course) and featured upgraded conrods, pistons, compression, heads, valves, solid lifter camshaft, manifolds and carburettor. To top it off the engine sported a chrome air cleaner cover with ‘289 high performance’ emblazoned on it. Put your foot down and an extra 50 horses were on tap resulting in around 271hp being produced by the sweet revving small block. The K code also scored dual exhausts, front disc brakes, a beefed-up clutch and driveline (the only early mustang to receive a 9 inch diff) to cope with the extra urge and more enthusiastic use. All this added up to a significantly expensive option, and given several other lesser 289 versions were available, resulted in such limited numbers being ordered. Adding to the status this performance package was quickly spotted by Carroll Shelby, seizing upon the K-Code Fastbacks as the basis for the first all-conquering Shelby GT350 road and track cars. The GT Package cars received a quick ratio steering box, special dual exhaust exiting through the rear valance, special handling package, 5 gauge instrument cluster, driving lights, and GT stripes and badges. Now offered for sale this superb Fastback has undergone an impeccable restoration and received significant owner upgrades, whilst at all times staying true to the car's special origins. The original rebuilt 289 engine is supplied with the car, however it is currently running a 374ci 642hp aluminium headed Dart Windsor built to the highest spec, through to a beefed up 1000hp spec C4 transmission, and braced Mark Williams 35 spline axle 9 inch diff. The owner has supplied an exhaustive and comprehensive summary of the work the car received over the 5 year period it took to build. We list this below in our website Spec's section. HISTORY AND VISION OF BUILD - CURRENT OWNER
I was endlessly in search of a 1965 K Code fastback mustang and to make things even harder it had to be a factory black on red interior car which in 1965 only 85 cars were produced in this combination.
After spending 2 years constantly searching I finally came across 'Black Betty' which is what I named her. It was 2012 when I saw her for sale on you tube at Geezers Classic Imports in Queensland. Upon arrival in Qld I was quick to notice how original and special she was with next to no rust, extremely clean undercarriage, all original quarter panels, doors and engine etc. She came from California where she was last registered in 2011 and still a driven car.
She then made her long journey to Sydney on a truck where the restoration of Black Betty would take place!!
The vision and aim of my build was to create something unique to my taste without taking away anything from her historic DNA, classic lines or structurally modifying anything that could impact her value as a true K Code.
The body was all taken back to bare metal on a rotisserie, all the chassis was tig welded to add extra strength to it. All Bodywork and Paint was done by Adam @ Underwood Smash who has many years experience on high end restorations. The result was razor sharp panels with perfect door gaps and perfect paint done with Spice Hecker and flow coat.
The undercarriage was also smoothed out and painted in semi gloss Spies Hecker paint and clear coat in black not your traditional red oxide which can look a bit rough at times and hard to keep clean.
The original radiator support was not cut, which was very important while I had to fit a larger aluminium radiator without cutting or impacting original structure. All interior floor has been covered with Dinamat not before it was all painted and sealed. The B&M shifter has been fitted to the floor in a way where the original mounting points of the top loader shifter are not changed or modified so if one wanted to fit a top loader they could do so easily.
The hood is the genuine steel Ford item which has had a substantial amount of frame modification to add to its strength as a hole was required to be strategically cut in the location where the Torino shaker is projecting out of the hood. The Torino shaker and hood ring are genuine Ford steel items and shaker is a fully functioning item feeding air to the 950 Holley carby.
Nothing is second hand in this build "everything" is brand new... wiring, heater box, radio, speakers, brake lines, rubber kit, bolts, screws, door locks, window regulators, window channels, quarter windows, windscreen, rear window, door windows, bumper bars, tail lights, headlights ,indicators, with window moulds are the original, dents removed and polished.
The car has only been driven locally with no more than 100km of use, engine, transmission differential etc have not been fully run it yet.
The original K code hi-po 289 complete running engine has been wrapped up in storage and comes with car.
The car was entered in 2022 MotorEx in Melbourne where she was amongst the best show cars in the country where she received a trophy of 3rd place for Best Paint in the extremely competitive Street Elite class where as a black car I believe is a huge achievement. She has won trophies in some smaller car shows for best paint, bodywork and best restored.
Thanks for reading, so sorry to see it go.. Cheers George.
