Amongst the Aussie classic cars sought after by collectors are the former police and law enforcement cars that patrolled the streets during the 1970s. Now for sale is a super rare K13 optioned Charger running the matching numbers 360 V8. For sale from our Sydney Showroom. Beyond the popular ‘BT1’ Commodores and Pursuit Falcons, there are also a few retired crime-fighting Valiants. Chrysler created several police specials based on the Charger which proved popular for highway patrol duties in Victoria, South Australia and NSW. These enhanced factory-developed cars received special factory enhancements grouped under a common option code beginning with the letter "K". These included drivetrain and suspension enhancements using many components developed for the discontinued R/T models. The first police Charger was based on the VJ, in XL grade with two-barrel 265 Hemi six and four-speed manual transmission. To this Chrysler added the K10 police Charger package, which included E36 engine upgrades comprising the R/T Charger dual-outlet exhaust manifold plus heavy-duty E49 crankshaft, main/big-end bearings and baffled anti-surge sump. Chassis upgrades included the A84 Track Pack’s more direct 16:1 steering gear plus uprated front torsion bars and front/rear sway bars, E49 rear leaf springs and shocks, heavy-duty brake package with front disc brake dust shields removed (to improve cooling), Suregrip LSD and 6.5-inch steel sports rims. The K code also included sun-visor, three-spoke sports steering wheel, reclining buckets seats and lots more. This package resulted in formidable performance capabilities, which according to Hey Charger co-author Gary Bridger were “virtually a halfway house between a base R/T 265 four-speed and the full-house E49: very much a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” The K12 package for VJ and VK Chargers introduced in 1975 was the same as K10 except that the Borg Warner four-speed manual gearbox was replaced by Chrysler’s heavy-duty A727 Torqueflite three-speed auto. The K13 package followed, which replaced the 265 Hemi six with the 5.9 litre 360 V8 giving the Charger superior straight-line performance. The final K16 package introduced the 318 V8 as a replacement for the discontinued 360 and was available in the VK and the final four-headlight CL police Chargers. Police officers were more than happy with the factory performance upgrades of the Police Charger, and the reliability meant that the cars could be depended on – even on the toughest cases. Today, these ex-police cars are highly sought after by collectors and are just as desirable and collectable as R/T Chargers. For sale is a super rare one of only 109 K13 VK Charger 770s ever produced. Running the all matching numbers 360 V8, 727 Torqueflite auto and Sure grip LSD rear. Presented in factory Arctic White paint, the car is in mostly original condition except for a closed door respray in the mid to late 1990s. The car still presents well with no rust or damage but general wear and tear over the last 40 years since it was repainted. The interior is all original with normal wear to the driver's seat and the Charger is showing 341,939 Kilometres on the clock. The car features the unique Police spec instrument cluster, an original set of keys and a Police fitted gear lever lock on the consul, dual horns and a 1990s electronic kill switch. There are also holes drilled above the ashtray in the dash that look like an older alarm system warning light. The car is fitted with factory heated rear window. The Charger was first registered with NSW registration plate HUI-556 on the 8th June, 1976 and served in the Newcastle area. The current custodian has owned the car since 1998 and used the car as a daily driver until about 2010. The car comes with Chrysler service manuals, registration papers from 2000 until present plus loads of mechanical service receipts including the engine rebuild receipt (2010), installation of Pacemaker extractors (2010) and the fitting of MSD ignition and an electronic distributor (2020). The car has done approximately 75,000 kilometres since the engine rebuild. The Charger is riding on factory Styled steel rims with good tyres. Some spares including a set of Jelly Bean mags 7" front and 8" rear, plus the original exhaust manifold, spare jacks and car radios. In the boot is a Styled steel rim with good tyre and factory tools. Currently on full NSW registration. Located in our Sydney Showroom for your inspection. (Ref: 5915) If you wish, we will gladly arrange an actual/video inspection tour of the car and of course there is no issue to arrange enclosed transport door to door anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.
