As with Ford's XY Falcon GTHO Phase 3 and Holden's LJ Torana GTR XU-1, Chrysler built a limited number of E38 R/T Chargers in order to homologate the modifications made to the standard R/T Charger so that Chrysler could participate in the lucrative Touring Car Series which culminated in the 1971 Hardie-Ferodo 500 at Bathurst on October 3, 1971. According to the Valiant Infobase, 316 E38 R/T Chargers were built with 224 factory optioned with the Bathurst long range fuel tank known as the Track Pack or Option 84. This option specified the 35 gallon 160 litre Bathurst tank strapped purposefully into the boot, a no-nonsense effort by Chrysler engineers to keep the big Valiant out on the race track for longer stints. Fitted with those awesome looking twin external fillers for faster fills, the Big Tank E38 is all class. The A84 option also spec'd the E38 with a 16:1 ratio steering box, 14x7" W35 ROH alloy wheels and heavy duty discs and hubs. Additionally the J82 Homologation for Racing option cars were fitted with the G60 Quarter Vent window option designed to force cool air towards the racing driver.

For sale is a meticulously restored Big Tank E38 Charger in signature Hot Mustard 2 pack and wrapped around a perfect original straight body, with impeccable Black interior. The feature car for the Australian Muscle Car Magazine article on the E38 Charger and also featured in Restored Chargers Legend Series, this E38 underscores the genius of Chrysler Australia's product development team. With its super sexy lines, wide sports wheels, the clever use of bright metal, the blunt tail with its inbuilt spoiler and, roofline ribs running down past the rear window conspire to make the E38 Charger one of the best looking Aussie muscle cars ever built.

Concours rotisserie restored in 2006 by Pentastar Restorations, the Charger still presents in unbelievable condition throughout. You can see the attention to detail of this restoration. A photo file of the restoration and receipts for parts supplied comes with the Charger. Mechanically, the matching numbers engine was rebuilt by Chrysler guru George Rallis in 2013 with quality internals and the engine has been dynoed at 228 HP at the wheels. Start her up and those three maestro tuned 45mm side-draught Weber masterpieces from Bologna, Italy mated to the legendary Chrysler 265ci Hemi six cylinder engine will surely give you goose bumps. The original 3 speed E38 gearbox was replaced with an E49 4 speed Hemi gearbox in 2014.

On the inside, the E38 is totally stock retrimmed in factory Black vinyl with the original dash, gauges, crash pad and steering wheel. Carpets and hood lining have been replaced and the seat belts reconditioned. The Charger is now showing 35,064 miles on the clock.

The underside of the car has been also fully restored and detailed with correct red oxide finish to the under floor area, correct green shock absorbers, tail shaft markings and diff tag. The E38 is riding on excellent Firestone Red Walled 205/70R14s all round.

Open the boot and the 160 Litre fuel tank still wears the original cardboard cover. The original boot matt, Firestone Red Walled spare and factory tools are also still in their place.

And to top it all off, the firewall of this special race bred Charger is signed by the one and only Leo Geoghegan who along with Peter Brown came in 7th overall in the 1971 Hardie Ferodo 500 in 1971.
