1960 Chrysler Royal AP3 V8 ... (SOLD)

Chrysler would develop the Chrysler Royal as an Australian only offering based loosely on a 1955 American Plymouth design. Offered to Australians from 1957 through to 1964, Chrysler offered two versions of a valve-in-block straight-6 engine and the optional 313 cu in (5.1 L) polyspherical-head V8. V8 powered Royals were popular with the South Australian Police as Highway Patrol cars and as tow vehicles for adventurous Australians traveling the country with a caravan. For sale is a wonderful original example of the final version of the Royal - a survivor 1960 model in Heather Blue with Moonstone side flash and featuring Chrysler's 3-speed Torqueflite push button automatic transmission. Built at the Keswick Chrysler Plant in South Australia, this AP3 was sold through Harden & Johnson Ltd of Flinders Street, Sydney. The car was sold to a farmer in Moree and then sold to the current owner in 1988. The Royal was repainted in Acrylic paint 30 years ago in the factory colour while maintaining the original chrome work. The interior has been fully retrimmed in a Commodore vinyl with cloth inserts. The dash, gauges and steering wheel are in original condition and the car has never had a radio or heater fitted. The Royal is showing a believed to be original 89,789 miles from new.

Mechanically the engine has had a top end rebuild maintaining the 2BBL carby, cast iron manifold and single exhaust. The Torqueflite gearbox has been rebuilt and operates through the push button system to the right of the dash. The diff has also had new seals fitted. The braking is drums all round with a new booster fitted and the master and wheel cylinders resleeved with stainless steel sleeves and rekitted.

The Octagenarian owner of more than 35 years has recently had the spring eye bushes, rear axle seals and front wheel bearings replaced and new Federal 185/80x15 tyres fitted all round. The car features the original hub caps and aftermarket dress rims.

In the boot is the original steel rim with older tyre and the Royal comes with a service manual, parts list and a copy of an article published on this car in a 2015 issue of Restored Cars magazine.

This is an enjoyable and super reliable club car and a very well preserved example of a rare Australian designed and built Chrysler.
