For many, the Australian inline six really came of age with the release of Ford’s Barra 182 engine in the BA series Falcon. For sale is an unmodified original example of the BA Falcon XR6 Turbo presented in Silhouette Mica Metallic. For sale from Adelaide, SA.

With the BA Falcon, Ford unveiled a new twin overhead cam alloy, four valves per cylinder 6 cylinder engine with variable cam timing that would give them a significant lead over arch rival Holden. And once a turbo was added to the recipe, the Barra 6 was confidently pumping out 240kW of power with the pro tuners getting considerably more.

To get the extra mumbo, the engine copped a Garret GT40 turbo, running at a reasonably conservative 0.4 bar boost. Power and torque numbers in the stock Barra were boosted from 182kW/380Nm to 240kW/450Nm. It was flexible, too, with peak torque chiming in as early as 2000rpm. Testers at the time reported no turbo lag and journos labeled the Barra 240 as the most sophisticated engine produced in Australia to that point, with inline coil packs, fly-by-wire throttle, a DOHC four valver with variable valve timing.

Most customers of the Turbo XR6 opted for the four-speed auto over the five-speed manual as the auto got the power down more easily and the auto’s tipshift mode made it a pleasure to use.

While the mechanical package impressed, the handling also scored highly. The journos glowed that “The handling is the real deal, too, with a crispness that’s pretty remarkable for a thing this size and weight. Confidently poised yet light on its feet.”

The current owner purchased this original series BA Falcon XR6 Turbo from Albury/Wodonga in 2019 from the second owner and the XR6 comes with the original log books, full service history and 191,922 Kilometres on the clock from new.

Mechanically, the XR6 Turbo has been fastidiously maintained by each owner with the log book and receipts to underscore this fact. There are no mods to the stock XR6 Turbo with standard boost and factory spec exhaust. This XR6 Turbo is in excellent condition throughout including a mint hood lining. The Warm Charcoal Carbon Cloth trim is in excellent condition throughout with no stains or wear. All instrumentation works, as does the A/C, power windows and the stock AM/FM/CD with colour screen. The XR6 has been fitted with Cobalt Oil pressure and boost gauges.

In the boot is the factory spare and tools, boot carpet and the Falcon is riding on a set of XR6 rims powder coated in black plus the original set of factory supplied alloys as well. The XR6 is riding on Dunlop Supercat 235/45R17 on the front and Bridgestone Turanza 235/45/17 on the rear. The spare wheel is fitted with the original alloy Ford XR6 wheel.

Getting harder to find in unmolested and unmodified condition, this is a well maintained surprise package from Ford that is guaranteed to entertain your driving senses.
