1977 LX SS Torana A9X Replica
This no expense spared Papaya Orange SS Torana A9X Hatchback replica is the A9X that the Holden engineers would have loved to build if the bean counters were given leave of their positions while putting the Torana A9X project together.
Try a 383 COME stroker engine built by Arthur and Troy’s Automotive, Sydney dynoed at BK Race Engines at 506HP at the flywheel with compression of 11.7 on 98 RON fuel. Add Dave Bennett Dash 3 alloy heads, stainless valves, Yella Terra roller rockers, Crane 288 solid cam, Torque Power single plane manifold, Holley 750 Ultra HP, MSD distributor, Blaster coil and Digi 6 ignition system.
Then throw in a Super T-10 4 speed gearbox with a McLeod 10.5” organic/ceramic clutch and a 9” with 28 spline Billet axles and 3.08 diff gears. Add a dual 2.5” cross pipe exhaust system, a huge 120 litre drop tank with fuel sender to the dash and an OZ Race mechanical fuel pump rated at 600 HP.
Inside spec it up with Recaro LS front seats with Monza Grey trim. Back seats are ok with the standard SS issue golf ball black trim. Upfront the SS dash and steering wheel work well. No need to change them. But lets upgrade the sound to a RetroSound radio with Kenwood 7” x 10” speakers and 300W amp. Add an Autometer recall tacho and Autometer oil and water gauges so we know what's going on under the bonnet.
Wheels. The GTS Style rims are nice but how about these amazing 15" Simmons gold alloy rims, with 11” rubber on the rear and 8.5” on the front with huge Pirelli PZero 345/35 outback. That'll definitely get the power to the ground. Upgrade the standard shocks and springs to Koni adjustable shocks with King springs up front and Pedders shocks and springs at the rear. And braking will be helped by HX front brakes with slotted discs and drums rear.
I think you get the picture. This is the sort of Torana that Holden engineers, Peter Brock and Harry Firth would have loved to build and could have only dreamt of such a build to race. Check out the video to hear the sound from this spectacular machine. And if you'd like to see it with your own eyes come and visit us at our Kingsgrove, Sydney showroom.
