For sale from a private collection is an unrestored special order 1973 VJ Valiant Charger 770 E55 340cui V8 in Vintage Red with Black trim. One of only 212 VJ E55s built (Given that CAMS required 200 to be built and sold to the public its obvious where the E55 was headed). Certainly one of Chrysler's rarest and most sought after models. For sale from our Sydney Showroom. There is no denying that Chrysler was well advanced in developing an E55 R/T. According to Gary Bridger and Gavin Farmer’s excellent book, Hey Charger, test driver Ken Hartland remembered that the prototype VG Pacer running a race-proven 340 cubic-inch V8/four-speed manual powertrain sourced from the US Trans-Am cars was “bloody quick” as he checked out the top speed of the car on a long straight road in South Australia. “The speedo was bouncing around at the 140mph mark”. Chrysler team racing drivers, Tom Naughton and Graham Ryan, also comment in the book that a V8-powered Charger R/T was due to be raced at Bathurst in 1973. “We could easily match the Falcons and Toranas across the top of the Mountain at Bathurst and almost match them going down Conrod Straight, but we were losing two or three seconds on the climb to the top (in the six-cylinder R/Ts). “If we’d had the 340 V8 as was planned for 1973, we would have been on even terms with the Falcons in particular.” The importance of these ultra rare Chargers cannot be underestimated. And finding a heavily optioned survivor is very rare indeed. Running the all matching numbers American hi-comp 340 engine and 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission, the Charger is optioned with the Protection Pack which includes body side mouldings and rear bumper overriders, W35 7" wide ROH alloys and 70-series tyres. The E55 was also dealer optioned with the pop up sunroof that was popular at the time. The exterior paint is mostly factory original with some touch ups with original paint in the boot and door jambs. The engine bay and engine have been repainted at the time of the engine rebuild. The rebuild included the fitment of Pacemaker extractors, a stainless exhaust and the E55 is running a Holley 4BBL carby, reconditioned radiator and brake booster. The exterior paint is showing signs of patina with some paint crazing of the original paint but otherwise the car is damage and rust free with excellent floors and sills. Originally sold through Essendon Chrysler in Moonee Ponds, Victoria on the 22nd February 1974, this E55 is showing 60,090 Klms on the clock and is a great entry level E55 that can be enjoyed and driven as is or restored if you are looking for a show stopper. With Chrysler rating power output at 275bhp. According to a Sports Car World comparison in November 1973, the E55 ripped through from 0-60 MPH in 7.2 seconds versus 7.7 seconds in an automatic XA Falcon GT. Both cars topped out at 127mph. The interior is in totally original condition throughout featuring the factory black trim, the E55 fish scale dash fascia, sports instrumentation, factory 2 spoke steering wheel, original carpet and hood lining. An aftermarket Alpine 6 stacker stereo has been fitted. Open the boot and the original tools/jack and original W35 spare are in place. The Charger is riding on 235/60R14 Maxxis 760 Bravo H/T on the front and 245/60R14 Maxxis 760 Bravo H/T on the rear. According to the Valiant Infobase, (www.valiantinfobase.com), this Charger is one of 794 6H29 770s built, one of 212 with the E55 option, one of 40 in Vintage Red, one of 21 with the paint and trim combo and ONE of ONE with the options specified. This is a well priced genuine E55 with more than a glimmer of Bathurst running through its very capable veins. It certainly is a super rare and highly sought after Mopar muscle car. Not to be missed.
