1973 Chrysler VJ Valiant Charger 770 E55 ... (SOLD)

For sale from a private collection is an unrestored special order 1973 VJ Valiant Charger 770 E55 340cui V8 in stunning Silver Metallic with Black trim. One of only 212 VJ E55s built (200 units were required by CAMS to qualify for Bathurst - so you can see where this was headed!!!) Certainly one of Chrysler's rarest most sought after models. For sale from our Sydney Showroom.

There is no denying that Chrysler was well advanced in developing an E55 R/T. According to Gary Bridger and Gavin Farmer’s excellent book, Hey Charger, test driver Ken Hartland remembered that the prototype VG Pacer running a race-proven 340 cubic-inch V8/four-speed manual powertrain sourced from the US Trans-Am cars was “bloody quick” as he checked out the top speed of the car on a long straight road in South Australia. “The speedo was bouncing around at the 140mph mark”. Chrysler team racing drivers, Tom Naughton and Graham Ryan, also comment in the book that a V8-powered Charger R/T was due to be raced at Bathurst in 1973. “We could easily match the Falcons and Toranas across the top of the Mountain at Bathurst and almost match them going down Conrod Straight, but we were losing two or three seconds on the climb to the top (in the six-cylinder R/Ts). “If we’d had the 340 V8 as was planned for 1973, we would have been on even terms with the Falcons in particular.”

The importance of these ultra rare Chargers cannot be underestimated. And finding an uniquely optioned survivor is very rare indeed.

Originally a special order for a well known Perth based photographer and Theatre owner, this VJ E55 Valiant Charger 770 was ordered with the special Diff option D74 Suregrip 3.27:1 heavy duty diff making this potentially a one off build E55 VJ Charger. Running the all matching numbers American hi-comp 340 engine and 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission, the Charger is optioned with the W35 7" wide ROH alloys and 70-series tyres and was dealer optioned with Smiths Underdash Airconditioning and a Pioneer Cassette player. In the ownership of the original owner from 1973 until 2021, the car received a closed door repaint in the original Silver Metallic and has otherwise survived in totally original factory condition.

The Charger has had continuous registration in WA until 2021 despite having little use in the last 20 years. Mechanically the E55 has been maintained in superb condition. With a log booked 77,927 Klms on the clock and having spent most of its time in the careful care of the original owner, this is a seriously enjoyable Charger to drive. The engine bay presents in Day 1 condition with all factory items still in place. The current owner has fitted headerswith a single Mandrell bent exhaust system so as not to disturb the original mounts, however, the original exhaust system comes with the car. Fuel is delivered to the engine by the factory Carter AVS four-barrel carburettor with Chrysler rating power output at 275bhp. According to a Sports Car World comparison in November 1973, the E55 ripped through from 0-60 MPH in 7.2 seconds versus 7.7 seconds in an automatic XA Falcon GT. Both cars topped out at 127mph.

The interior is in totally original condition throughout featuring the factory black trim, the E55 fish scale dash fascia, sports instrumentation, factory 2 spoke steering wheel, original carpet and hood lining. The dealer fitted A/C and Stereo and both in excellent working order.

Open the boot and the original Jack instruction sticker is still in place as is an original W35 spare, factory tools and perfect day one boot mat.

Originally delivered by Halberts Chrysler in Guildford, Western Australia, the Charger is supplied with the original owners log books, owners manuals, A/C and radio instructions and a letter from the original owner who is available to verify the special order status, originality and mileage of the Charger.

This is a beautiful and very comfortable Charger with more than a glimmer of Bathurst running through its very capable veins. It certainly is a super rare and highly sought after Mopar muscle car. Not to be missed.
