The Z/28 alphanumeric GM sales code is forever linked with the Chevrolet Camaro. This GMH code for "Special Performance Package" was first introduced in December 1966. For 1973, the Z/28 package included the L-82 small block 350 V8 with hydraulic cam topped by the Quadrajet 4BBL carby. For sale is an excellent original example of the Z/28 in Medium Red with original Black trim and featuring the special order close ratio 2.20 first gear for the bullet proof 4 speed Muncie and the Positraction 3.73 diff. For sale from our Sydney Showroom. Ordered by a Mr. Scott Johns from Lou Awald Chevrolet in Kenmore, New York on the 27th of February, 1973, this Camaro Z/28 was optioned with the Z/28 package, a 4 speed Muncie gearbox, rear defogger, power steering, adjustable seats, spoilers, black stripe kit, AM radio and rust proofing. The total invoice ... $4,580.40. Mr. Johns owned the car until 1999 when it was sold to his brother who retained this well loved Chevy until it was purchased by the current owner in 2013 and imported to Australia. The current owner invested 5 years searching for a high impact colour manual Z/28 and his search was rewarded when he came across this example. Presented in mostly original Medium Red factory paint, the owner enlisted the help of well known Falcon GT restorer Jason Greenwood who replaced the entire floor and detailed the engine bay and boot. As the car had started its life in New York City some of the floor and rear rails were in need of attention. Rather than just repair the floor Jason replaced the entire floor joining it through the original points. The sills were untouched. All finishes including the red oxide primer, seam sealer and overspray were reapplied. Even the original style bitumen deadening was reapplied. The boot area was finished in the original spatter paint duplicating the factory finish. At the same time, the engine bay was detailed. All new factory correct hardware and clips were used courtesy of Heart Beat City Camaro in Michigan. All new lines and cables were fitted. And a new wiring harness was fitted to the engine bay again courtesy of Heart Beat City Camaro. The exterior paint has been left original as the car is a survivor. The purchaser can choose to enjoy the Z/28 as the current owner has or embark on a repaint. There are some visible areas of rust in the doors and paint crazing on the bonnet and boot lid but not bad for a 50 year old car. The interior is mostly original and maintained as necessary with both front seats repaired at sometime. The original seatbelts were restored in the US with the original date codes. The carpet is original as is the rear seat cover and dash pad. Mechanically, the engine has an original 71,544 miles on the clock and had bever been apart! It is the original Z/28 engine with the factory 4 bolt mains, steel crank, pink rods, forged pistons, large valve 2.02/1.60 X heads, guide plates and the hot factory hydraulic cam for 1973. The current owner has retained the genuine factory hydraulic cam, advanced by four degrees and fitted a new timing chain set. He has also fitted a genuine 1970 Z/28 alloy intake and a restored genuine 1971 Z/28 Holley 780 carby (which alone cost around $2,500) but the original Quadrajet 4BBL carby and intake manifold come with the car. The owner has also fitted headers and a full 2 1/2” Flowmaster exhaust but the original exhaust manifolds and exhaust system come with the car. The original matching number distributor was retained but an electronic conversion added. The Z/28 was chassis dynoed and produced an impressive 251.5 hp at the wheels translating to a genuine 350 horsepower at the engine. Amazing for an original engine. The diff has been serviced and found to be in excellent condition. The gearbox retains its VIN stamping and has never been apart and operates well with its original factory Hurst shifter. The car also comes with an original AM radio although it has had the CD player in it since imported in 2013. The Camaro comes with great provenance with a raft of paperwork including its original purchase invoice. The current owner has spoken at length to the original owner who is still alive and well in New York and he has photos of the original owner and his brother sitting on the Z/28 taken in about 1973. In the boot is a brand new OER brand Z/28 rim and brand new reproduction Firestone Wide Oval F60-15 tyre as originally fitted from Antique Tires. There is also a reproduction jack to complete the detailing of the boot area. The car is an absolute pleasure to drive and is a fine example of a second generation Z/28.
