1971 Dodge Charger SE - Big Block 400 V8
For sale from Picton, NSW a rare 1971 Dodge Charger SE running the matching numbers Chrysler 400ci Magnum 4bbl big block V8 and 727 Torqueflite auto.
Imported to Australia in 2003, this Dodge Charger was originally painted Gold Metallic and was ordered with the optional Brougham trim package, full black vinyl roof, AM radio, air-conditioning, power steering and dual exhausts. Resprayed in 2016 in Chrysler Rallye Red 2 pack paint with a new vinyl top fitted, the Charger has been lovingly cared for by the mechanic owner for the past 7 years.
The Charger is running the matching number 400ci big block Magnum HP V8 and the heavy duty 3 speed 727 Torqueflite automatic with 3.21 ratio 8 3/4 Sure Grip rear end. The 400ci (6.6 litre) B engine was introduced to replace the venerable 383ci V8. Chrysler increased the bore size of the 383 to create the 400. The 400 cui engine featured a new cast iron crankshaft and the largest bore used in any production Chrysler V8 at the time. Three versions of this engine were available with the most powerful being the high-performance four-barrel/dual-exhaust version rated at 260hp. Due to its large factory bore size, short deck height (compared to RB engines), and bottom end strength that was greater than other production engines due to extra material added around the main bearing caps, the 400 B engine blocks have become a popular choice for high-performance engine build-ups.
Mechanically this Charger Big Block has been fully maintained including engine and transmission service, the fitting of Mopar finned valve covers, a new alternator and belts, new air conditioning compressor, new ignition and headlight switch and a low beam h4 headlight conversion.
On the inside, the SE features the optional Brougham luxury trim package which includes cloth & vinyl bucket seats with plush carpet, electric clock, deluxe steering wheel with partial horn ring, simulated wood-grained trim, padded door trim panels, added sound insulation and door pull handles. The Charger features sports instrumentation, an aftermarket Mopar sports steering, AM/FM radio with bluetooth compatibility, air-conditioning and power steering. All chrome and glass is in excellent condition.
The Charger is supplied with the 2003 import paperwork, the Chrysler production broadcast sheet, an extensive parts history and receipts going back to 1997 including for the engine rebuild.
The Charger is riding on BF Goodrich 235/60R15 tyres on the factory Rallyee steel rims with dress rims.
