1969 Ford Falcon XW GTHO Phase I - Starlight Blue
With the third generation Falcon GT, Bill Bourke, Ford's energetic managing Director enlisted the expertise of Al Turner, a legendary American drag racer to further develop the Falcon GT into a pure racing machine. The GT-HO program combined American DNA from the Boss Mustangs, Mercury Cougars and Torinos with Aussie engineering know how to create the original GT-HO based on the Windsor powered GT Falcon.
Working from Ford's Lot 6 on Mahoneys Road, in Thomastown, Victoria, Big Al and his team developed a GT Falcon that was designed to satisfy CAMS requirements for Series Production racing. The GT-HO "Handling Package" was designed to win at Bathurst and added the following to the standard XW GT Falcon. Included was the attachment of a front spoiler, fitment of a rear stabiliser bar, a larger 650 cfm Holley carby, an aluminium Buddy Bar inlet manifold, improved cam shaft and hydraulic valve lifters.
A 3" diameter propeller shaft and a heavy duty alternator and regulator were also fitted.
The GT-HO was sold as a regular Ford product at a $245 premium over the standard GT Falcon at $4,495.
The GT-HO package took the GT Falcon package to a new level and in doing so created a race winning formula that not only created a legendary series of race winning Falcons but also boosted Ford's car sales through the publicity generated from the GT-HOs winning ways.
