1968 HK GTS Monaro 307 V8 ... (SOLD)

For sale a rare genuine three owner '68 HK GTS Monaro 307 V8 in Picardy Red for inspection at our Sydney Showroom.

The sleek, pillarless two-door Monaro was introduced six months after the rest of the HK range but soon took pride of place in Holden dealerships across the country. Its 'boy racer' appeal was universal, the Monaro's shape unashamedly based on the glorious US muscle cars of the time. The pillarless two-door coupe design was a new concept for Australians, and with a choice of three models - Monaro, Monaro GTS and GTS 327, Holden were catering for anyone who aspired to own a sporty coupe.

Even if you were a staunch Ford supporter it was near impossible not to fall in love with the design. It's long, wide body, flared wheel arches and sweeping roofline, black rally stripes, unique wheel trims, paint finishes and a tail panel strip that replicated a full-width tail light were irresistible.

And to top it off, the HK Monaro GTS 327 in the hands of Bruce McPhee and Barry Mulholland driving the Wyong Motors entered HK 327 left no question marks that this was a car with the brawn as well as the beauty by winning the Hardie-Ferodo 500 at Bathurst in 1968 against the XT GT Falcon. In fact the HK 327 Monaro filled 1st, 2nd, 3rd and fifth places in the Great Race of 1968 cementing the Monaro as one of Holden's All Stars!

For sale is this largely original 1968 HK Monaro GTS (80737) with body no. 00551, originally built at the Pagewood, Sydney plant and finished in Picardy Red with Parchment trim.

Purchased from Maypole Motors at Lakemba, NSW, the HK GTS is basically an unrestored car, featuring an older paint job on the outside only with original paint in the engine bay, door jambs and boot. The paint is shiny and looks good from a distance but the car would definitely benefit from a fresh repaint in the future. The body shows no rust or damage and looks to be essentially a very solid survivor grade Monaro.

The matching numbers 307 Chev engine, the original Rochester 2bbl carby, original exhaust manifolds, spark plug heat shields and factory quad exhaust outlets are all there and the car has been mechanically maintained and is a reliable and enjoyable cruiser. The original 2 speed powerglide feels fine, and shifts smoothly. The original engine bay stickers and markings are also all still in place and the compliance plates have never been removed from the car.

The interior of the HK has been restored with a new crash pad, new carpets, door trims, seat covers and roof lining. The original steering wheel is there but has a couple of cracks, all the gauges work and the factory AM radio is still there. The dash chrome and timber finish have also been restored. The car is showing 73,557 miles and comes with an original owners manual, two keys, one being the original, receipts and some documents. The original heater box has been removed as it was no longer working but is supplied with the car.

The HK was originally displayed on a turntable at Maypole Motors when new. This has been confirmed by the current owner who has spoken to the original owner of this Monaro who is still keen to stay in touch with this special car. When the car was on display at Maypole Motors, the dealer fitted quite a few NASCO accessories that are still with the car including the door handle scuff plates, bumper over riders, fuel over flow splash shield and Tasman mag wheels. The Tasman wheels have since been replaced with genuine Monaro 14" steel wheels with genuine Firestone D-70 red wall tyres.

This is a jump in and enjoy car that presents very tidy, doesn't over heat, starts and runs perfectly, has been well serviced, used sparingly and is greatly admired wherever she goes.

All ownership history is supplied with the car with the original owner retaining the HK until 2016 and then two collector owners since.
