1967 Ford Galaxie 500 390 V8 ... (SOLD)

The Galaxie was built in America by Ford from 1959 through to 1974. The name was used for the top models in Ford's range in an attempt to capture the excitement surrounding the Space Race. Billed as “the newest since 1949”, Ford’s Galaxie underwent a major restyle for 1967, emerging with sharper, cleaner lines devoid of the excessive chrome ornamentation of earlier generations. The Galaxie’s new interior came with more luxury features and, for the first time, coil sprung rear suspension dramatically improved the ride. There were several trim levels available, including the intermediate 500 series (named after the 500-mile NASCAR events dominated by the big Fords), the sporting XL range or the luxury-oriented LTD.

The 1967 models – with their signature stacked headlights – were the first Australian-assembled Galaxies, built at Ford’s Homebush factory in New South Wales. Designated the GE series and sourced from Canada in CKD form, local Galaxies were offered with a choice of Windsor 289ci or the FE Big Block 390ci V8 engines, and used a right-hand drive woodgrain dashboard based on an earlier Lincoln Continental model. All Australian Galaxies were equipped with automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes and luxury features like washer/wipers and a three-speed heater/defroster unit.

Proving popular with business leaders, politicians, and farmers, for whom a big, powerful American car carried a certain status, only the four-door sedan was offered to Australian buyers. With those attributes and being easy to work on, the Galaxie remains a popular classic Ford model, with a loyal following and plenty of support from local clubs and specialists.

FOR SALE is a stunning unrestored and original Ford Galaxie with a believed to be genuine 43,091 miles on the clock. Presented in stunning original Silver Grey Metallic paint and Medium Blue vinyl trim, this survivor Galaxie is a rare find today. Running the optional matching numbers 390 Big Block V8 engine, C6 automatic gearbox and 9" diff this is bullet proof running gear and a unique offering for an Aussie car of the period.

Fitted with all the luxuries for the period including under dash working air-conditioning, this Galaxie is a true time warp example. Rather than match Holden’s fibreglass copy of the US Chevrolet dash, Ford developed its own RHD dash for the Galaxie with top-shelf Lincoln instruments. In addition to lifting the Galaxie’s stature, the fully-moulded dash established the design theme for coming Cortinas, Falcons and the Australian ZA Fairlane.

Under the bonnet, the Galaxie presents in factory day one condition with all factory stickers and markings still in place.

Despite modest sales, the Galaxie was the hero model of Fords extensive range of cars. The XR Falcon was promoted as Mustang-bred, but the 1967 XR Fairmont V8 shared more with the local 1967 Galaxie’s styling and cabin upgrades than any Mustang, including its engine! And not only was it the perfect showroom partner for the XR Falcon range in its first full year of sales, it validated the entire packaging of Ford’s first local Fairlane. It was no coincidence that the ZA Fairlane appeared to offer the almost-complete Galaxie experience for two thirds the price. The vertical indicator/reversing light units inside each taillight were a subtle, but important, top-shelf cue shared across Fairmont, Fairlane and Galaxie.

Given the 1967 Galaxie continued into 1968, it was also a useful preview of the padded steering-wheel centre (similar to the XR Falcon GT’s) and safety cabin hardware coming in the local XT/ZB range.
