1966 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S
The mid 1960s was a tough time to be selling a sporty pony car. With the release of Ford's iconic Mustang, no other manufacturer could compete and production numbers were never more than a fraction of the number of Ponies being pumped out of Ford's assembly plants. In 1965, Plymouth decided that the Barracuda needed a performance package of its own. Chrysler's answer was the Formula S.
By selecting this option, buyers received the 235hp Commando 273 V-8 powerplant, larger wheels and tyres, suspension upgrades and a tachometer; all of which helped make the Barracuda a performer out on the street, especially when paired with the A-833 four-speed transmission.
Compression was boosted from 8.8:1 to 10.5:1, and a hotter cam and Carter AFB four-barrel carburetor were added as well. This brought output up to a respectable 235 hp, which helped propel the lightweight A-Body down the road with ease.
The Formula S package sold well, with 5,316 cars built out of the total of 38,029 Barracudas. These little A-Bodies became a popular choice for professional road course racers looking for a car that could compete when both power and agility were needed.
In 1966, the Barracuda shed the Valiant nameplates that had been part of the car since birth. The circular fish logo first makes its appearance here on the back glass/trunk trim, replacing the Valiant "V" from 1964-1965.
For sale is a stunning example of the 1966 Barracuda Formula S. This car has been concours restored in factory Grey Silver in 2013 in 2 Pac paint.
The well-appointed interior features factory working Airtemp Airconditioning, AM radio (with Blue tooth upgrade) and a magnificent Black vinyl with period correct Houndstooth cloth inserts.
The attention to detail is second to none with a full dash restoration, square weave carpet, original stunning fine green tinted glass and that Formula S only 8 grand tacho. In addition to the in-dash tachometer, the Formula S got the larger 14x5.5 steel wheels, covered with the attractive Formula S-only "rocket" hubcaps, front disc brakes, sports console, and Sure Grip rear, along with the tinted windshield.
The current owner has added a side exhaust pipe just in front of the passenger side rear wheel in line with the period racer style image of the Formula S.
The car comes with the steel Certi Card which is the birth plate for the car. There is also an owners manual and a receipt file. There is also a custom car cover tailor made for the car.
Although the Barracuda wasn't the winner of the pony car wars of the '60s, the Formula S has become one of the greatest performers of the muscle car era and certainly a hero Mopar car.
