1960 Chevrolet Belair 327 V8 - Australian Delivered

$SOLD

During the 1960s, the average Australian would need near enough to two years income to purchase a basic new Holden. On the other hand, Chevrolet in Australia at the time was sold as a luxury brand. Typically, in the 1960s, Australian Chevrolet buyers were company directors or wealthy farmers. Australia only assembled 1,541 right hand drive Bel Air 4-door sedans and received just 150 export RHD 1962 Impala Sport Sedans.

To put this into perspective, in Australia, Chevrolet sold directly against such brands as Mercedes Benz, Jaguar and BMW. The interiors of Australian-assembled Chevrolets boasted 100% genuine wool carpet, and seats were upholstered in high grade genuine leather equal to that used in a Cadillac or Rolls Royce Silver Cloud! These Chevrolets were assembled in Australia from ‘CKD’ kits (Completely Knocked Down Kits), which were exported from GM’s Tarrytown plant. As expected, extra care was taken with the final assembly of these high-priced luxury Bel Airs.

This was a car that was driven by Australian Government Heads of State (including Prime Ministers during the 1960s), who were chauffeur driven in black Chevrolet 4-door Bel Airs.

For sale is a superb example of the 1960 Chevrolet Belair. The car is a genuine Fischer bodied Chev assembled in Australia and factory RHD. The car has been fully restored in 2017 with a bare metal respray with a retrim in two tone matching red and white trim. The restoration included a full rebuild to the 327 V8 Chevrolet engine and 2 speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Attention was given to the braking system with HQ disc brakes fitted up front. All suspension has been rebushed and the car has been blue slipped and comes with 12 months NSW registration.

The car is riding on 5 restored Grand Rally rims with brand new 205x65 R15 Grandride tyres.
