XW GT Across the Nullarbor
Paul purchased his Grecian gold XW GT Falcon in Sydney and had AMCS get it ready for his dream drive home to WA. He sent through a few photos and a commentary on the trip. We at AMCS hope Paul's story inspires a few other owners to get their Aussie Muscle cars ready so they too can enjoy a once in a life time great Aussie road trip.
Paul said, "After catching the red eye to Sydney on Sunday Night and grabbing some breaky we wandered into AMCS workshop to catch up with Chris and finally see the XW for the first time. The car was better than the photo’s, perfect condition and a credit to the previous owner.
The tidy up and service performed by Chris was exactly what I had asked for, so after packing our gear in the XW and my mate buying the RPO 83 parked next to it, we fired her up and hit the Sydney traffic.
Travelling out through the Blue Mountains was a great way to get a feel for the car, straight to Bathurst and a few laps of the mountain just to see what it would have been like in 1969. What an awesome start to the dream road trip. Made it to Cowra for the first night - minus 2 degrees was a bit of a shock to wake up to, but the trusty XW heaters worked a treat.
Pulling up at Quick Fix Harley in Mildura to catch up with another good mate we noticed a little drip of coolant coming out from a pin hole in the water pump housing. A couple of phone calls and we had a water pump, fitted it, knocked off a bottle of Jacks, had a lay down then hit the road.
The Grand Tourer was doing just what it was made for, eating up the long miles effortlessly. 36 hours later we made it back to Bunbury. The car didn’t miss a beat, sitting on 65 MPH.
Fuel stops were few and far between with the huge 36 Gallon tank. Since getting back she’s been washed and polished and looks brand new, what a great adventure, driving a GT Falcon across the country.
Thanks to Mike and Chris from AMCS for their help in getting the car sorted and to Gerry the previous owner for looking after this car for 40 years.
