About the 250C

This 1973 Mercedes-Benz Compact 250 Coupe had been pampered and enjoyed by just the one careful owner from new for 35 years, having been delivered through Lane's in Melbourne in 1973.

The second owner took ownership in late 2009 driving the classic from Melbourne to Sydney without missing a beat and with better fuel consumption than most new cars!

An excellent, original vehicle with full service books and history including factory data cards.

Never been modified and remains in excellent condition.

The interior is almost factory perfect a testament to the Mercedes Benz quality of the era and the care shown by the previous owner.

Dealer fitted under dash air conditioning, the vehicle has travelled an indicated 86,000 miles.

Original toolkit, jack & Continental spare tyre.

Correct period Becker AM/FM Stereo modified to have discreet iPod rear input.

Factory central locking.

Just serviced with new belts, fluids, whitewall tyres and 12 months NSW registration.

Starts first time, drives better than most new cars, and a simply awesome automobile to cruise around town or eat up the highway on a weekend.

I looked around for a long time at affordable US & Australian classics before finding this classic. Easy to maintain, superior quality that was decades ahead of it’s time and always a headturner.

Being offered for sale with much regret as finding another European classic in this condition will be near impossible and cost much more in the future.

Introduced in 1969 and based on the W114 sedan, the 250C was an elegant two-door pillarless coupe with a roofline treatment reminiscent of the Pagoda SL, using twin chrome stripes running the length of the roof. Mechanically, the 250C actually used the 2496cc in-line six with either carburettors, as here, or with Bosch's D-Jetronic fuel injection system.

With a four-speed manual gearbox standard, Mercedes-Benz offered a four-speed fluid-coupled automatic transmission as an option and the sophisticated technical specification continued through to the fully independent suspension with semi-trailing rear end, plus disc brakes all round.

The seats were mounted lower in the coupe due to the reduced roofline and the boot boasted even greater capacity than the sedan on which it was based.

Safety was paramount with Mercedes-Benz and the 250C came with anti-burst door locks, adjustable head restraints on the front seats and an interlocking mechanism that held the seats in position once the doors closed.

The new model found favour and Road & Track Magazine saying "A smooth, handsome coupe with excellent handling and brakes". Production of the 250C/CE models ceased in 1976, by which time 11,800 had been made, and these cars are now coming into their own as more affordable alternatives to the sixties 250/280SE range.
