Flavio's (P)ride
Flavio is the proud owner of an original mustard E49 he has owned for 35 years. It is the first car he brought as a 16 year old boy.
Flavio tells us "It all began when I started hanging out with the boys around Fremantle in WA. We had organized some street drags with the Midland boys as well and they rolled up with 2 Centuras and a Charger.
And boy did they whip our butts down the quarter. From that day on, I always wanted a Charger. Not knowing about 6 packs I went looking for a Charger with triple Webbers. I spotted a black one in a car yard in Victoria Park and asked how much for the black Charger on the ramps. The salesman responded by saying its already sold but he had 2 arriving on Monday morning. Being an apprentice boiler maker meant I would have to take the day off with out my Mum and Dad finding out so I organised my mate to pick me up that morning and like little kids waiting for their presents on Christmas morning waited outside the car yard for these 2 Chargers to roll up at about 9 o'clock in the morning.
We heard two hotted up cars come down the street. It was a green Charger and a Mustard one. Not knowing about six packs back then, as I was only 16, I chose to take the mustard one for a test drive only because it had the A 84 track pack option, stripes and the distinctive number 4 on the side of the guard. It looked meaner than the other one and it only had 27,000 miles on the clock but the worst thing of all I did not have a drivers licence yet. I got my mate Bruno to test drive it. I sat in the passenger seat as we drove out of the car yard. Bruno gave it a boot full of gas and guess what we both shat ourselves. We only went approximatly 100 yards down the road and I was like a little kid I must have this car. So I raced home and got my Mum to go guarantee for me and that's how I ended up with a mustard E49 which I still own today and am currently restoring.
In the early days not knowing what the future held for these cars I did not look after it too well. I put a 9" in the arse end and put velour inserts in the seats and speaker holes in the door panels but the good thing is its got very little rust and its only done 74,000 original miles. I am looking forward to restoring it to its former glory.
As I learned about these cars, I found out the black Charger was an E48 and the green one was also an E48 as it turned out I ended up with the better model being an E49. Also I would like to mention it was raced at Wanneroo race track in WA by its previous owner which I am going to try and track down.
